Thoughts on critical pedagogy

Critical pedagogy will be an effective course to help me challenge my own thoughts beyond the realm of a text or instructor. I intend to use this course to build to my literature review for the dissertation proposal and embark upon the journey of theory exploration.

  1. Thoughts on metanarratives:

The metanarrative discussion poses some thought provoking questions. The question of interest for me was what is the problem that Disney writers have with mothers? I am deeply concerned about the lack of postive matriarchal images.

  2. Good question re: the lack of motherly examples in Disney. I like to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that Mothers are difficult to characterize. Mom's are sometimes disciplinarians and at other times coaches and guides to their children. Maybe in the simplicity of the cartoon world and storytelling Moms are just superfluous and not really all of that relevant to the story being told (?).

  3. One of the very interesting options that critical theory provides is the absolute ability to turn all that we know 'upside down'. Thinking critically is a very liberating act. Just imagine the multiple lenses that you can now explore your dissertation topic through!
